Objective
In order to cultivate technological talents, the Macronix Education Foundation is encouraging senior high school students and technological & vocational students who have an interest in natural sciences and applied sciences to explore the creative and inventive spirit of science.

Contest Subjects
Contestants choose from one of the following eight areas: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Machinery and Information Sciences.

Qualification
＊ Participation is restricted to individual senior high and technological & vocational school    students, and each student is allowed to submit one project only.
   Those with special circumstances need to apply with organizers at least two months before
   signing up.
＊ Each participant can have only one advisor, who must be a teacher either at a senior high
   school or a technological & vocational school.

Assessment Criteria
Students who, on the basis of their senior high or technological & vocational school education, have completed projects that demonstrate free play of their imagination and creativity will be awarded.

Contest Schedule
＊ Registration time: March 1, 2013 to May 31, 2013. Students need to turn in an explanation of
   their creativity before the registration deadline in order to be fully registered.
＊ Finals notification: The list of finalists and outstanding pieces will be posted on the
   Foundation's website and the Science Awards' microsite in early July 2013.
＊ Achievement report submission time: Achievement reports, abstracts, PPT files for the Finals
   all need to be turned in before October 18, 2013.
＊ Finals: To be held in November 2013. ＊ Award Ceremony: The Award Ceremony will be held
   in December 2013 and will also feature a project exhibition.

Critiquing Methods
＊ Preliminaries
Critiquing will be conducted by judges reviewing the participant's explanation of creativity and the finalists will be determined by the judges on a consensual basis.

＊ Finals
1. The finalists will make a 15-minute presentation of their achievement reports before the
   judges, plus a 15-minute oral defense. The ranking will be determined by the judges on a
    consensual basis.
2. Items created from the projects must be presented to the judges at the critiquing session.
    If participants are unable to bring the created items to the critiquing session, they must keep
   all necessary records of their projects as the judges may conduct an evaluation at their labs.

Reward Methods
＊ Certificate of participation: Participating students who turn in their explanation of creativity on time will be issued a certificate.

＊ Preliminaries
There will be no more than 20 finalists and 80 outstanding projects chosen.
Students who have outstanding projects along with their advisors can each receive a prize of NT$5,000 as well as a certificate. The award notification will be emailed to participants. Finalists and their advisors can each apply for a maximum NT$20,000 in research subsidy.
※Explanation for finalists' research subsidies: The research subsidies for the finalists are meant to facilitate further research work on their project ideas as indicated in their explanation of creativity, so that their eventual achievement reports may have more complete and improved content than that shown in the explanation of creativity. Finalists and their advisors can fill out the application form in the notice letter they receive regarding entrance into the Finals to apply for a maximum of NT$20,000 in research grants with the foundation.

＊ Finals

The Macronix Award	(the organizer may choose not to declare a winner for it) goes to a project that is better than the Gold Medal recipient. The winner will receive a trophy, a certificate, along with a yearly scholarship of NT$120,000 for four years at any university or technology institute.。
The Gold Medal	winner will receive a trophy, a certificate, along with a yearly scholarship of NT$100,000 for four years at university or technology institute.
The Silver Medal	winner will receive a trophy, a certificate, along with a yearly scholarship of NT$50,000 for four years at university or technology institute.
The Distinguished Medal	winner will receive a trophy, a certificate, along with a yearly scholarship of NT$25,000 for four years at university or technology institute.
The Distinguished Medal	A student who has won the Macronix Science Awards several times during his or her senior high school years will only receive the highest one of the scholarships he or she has won. ※A participant's advisor will receive a certificate and trophy. ※Participants who make it into the final round but fail to receive an award will be ranked as outstanding projects entitled to an award of NT$5,000 each along with a certificate. Their advisors will also receive a certificate.
Award for the School	The three schools that accumulate the highest scores in the contest will receive prizes corresponding to the scores (12 points for Macronix Prize, 8 points for Gold Medal, 6 points for Silver Medal, 4 points for Distinguished Medal and 2 points for Outstanding Projects. For every point there will be a cash prize of NT$1,000).
Award for the Principal	The principals of the top-three schools will receive a trophy designed by artists.
Advisor Contribution Award	Advisors who have a total amount of 24 points (12 for the Macronix; 8 for the Gold; 6 for the Silver; 4 for the Distinguished; 2 for Outstanding Projects) will be awarded a cash prize of NT$30,000 and a certificate. After cashing in on the points, the remaining points can be accumulated for future contests.
University Letter of Recommendation	Students who make it into the Finals or receive a prize will be issued a Letter of Recommendation from the critiquing committee in assistance for entrance into an undergraduate program.

How to enter the contest and submit projects

＊ Preliminary items:：

1.	Participants need to turn their explanation of creativity into a PDF file and upload it to the Macronix Science Awards' website. Log in to confirm the upload. (The explanation can be written in either Chinese or English. It should be within 20 pages of the A4 format. Any exceeding pages should be submitted as an appendix.)
2.	The explanation of creativity should include one's research topic, research motivation, research objective, research methods, and reference materials. Project titles should be written in a formal thesis style, relevant to content, and able to sufficiently express the theme of the work. Fancy expressions should be avoided. If necessary, the judges may revise the titles.

＊ Items that need to be turned in for Finals have to be done so before October 18, 2013.

1.	Please mail three unstapled copies of the achievement report either in English or Chinese (on A4 paper, single-sided, and within 30 pages; extra pages may be attached as an appendix section) to the organizer. The date on the postal chop will be taken as the date of application. And remember to upload a PDF version of the report to the Science Awards' website.
2.	The achievement report needs to contain one's research topic, research motivation, research objective, research process, conclusion, discussion and applications, and reference material. Project names should be written in a formal thesis style, relevant to the content, and able to sufficiently express the theme of the work. Fancy expressions should be avoided. If necessary, the judges may revise the titles.
3.	Project abstracts should be in 1,000-1,200 words (about two pages on single-sided A4 paper containing texts and pictures/charts), to be included in the contest brochure. The entry number should be indicated in the abstract, which should be emailed in jpeg format to alice@youngchic.com.tw 。
4.	PPT presentations are limited to 30 slides, and the file size should not exceed 5MB. The PPT file may be uploaded to the Science Awards' website.

Reminder

1.	Those whose projects have been ranked within the top three at other national or international science competitions cannot re-submit the same pieces.
2.	If projects are plagiarized, have dishonest research results, infringe intellectual property rights, or violate any other rules, they will be disqualified from the competition and the participant will shoulder all legal responsibility.
3.	Projects who are supported by grants from elsewhere are not eligible for the contest. They must disclose the related information when submitting the application; otherwise, they could be disqualified from the competition.
4.	Those who do not attend Finals forfeit their rights for receiving awards.
5.	Competition ranking is based on the actual development. When circumstances arise, no winners will be declared.
6.	The intellectual property rights of the projects belong to the participants, but Macronix has preferential treatment for negotiating rights.
7.	Both the creativity explanation and achievement report will not be returned.
8.	Students who are awarded scholarships will receive them after registration of each semester.
9.	The Foundation possesses the publishing rights.
