About Macronix Science Awards

Objective
In order to cultivate technological talents, the Macronix Education Foundation is encouraging senior high school students and technological & vocational students who have an interest in sciences, includeing nature and applied sciences to explore the creative and inventive spirit of science.

Contest Subjects
Contestants choose from one of the following eight areas: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Machinery and Information Sciences.

Qualification
  • Participants are restricted to no more than three members who must be senior high and technological & vocational school students.
  • Each participant is only allowed to submit one project.
  • Each team can have only one advisor, who must be a teacher either at a senior high school or at a technological & vocational school.

Assessment Criteria
The submitted project should base on their school education and demonstrate their creativity and innovation.

Contest Schedule
  • Registration: From March 1 to May 20 13:00 PM, 2024.
  • Student must submit all required components of the Macronix Science Awards online application in order to be considered for awards. Failure to do so could result in disqualification.
  • Finals notification: The list of finalists and outstanding pieces will post on the Macronix Eduction Foundation’s website on July 1, 2024.
  • Final scientific research report submission: Final result reports, abstracts, PPT files for the Finals all need to be submitted before August 21, 2024.
  • Finals: To be held in September 7-8, 2024.
  • Award Ceremony: To be held in early Novermber, 2024.

How to enter the contest and submit projects

  • Preliminary:
    1. Applicants need to submit their research project creativity description report (accepts PDF file only) and upload it to the Macronix Science Awards website. Log in to confirm the upload. (The report can be written in either Chinese or English. It should be within 20 pages of the A4 format. Any exceeding pages should be submitted as an appendix.)
    2. The creativity description report should include research topic, motivation, objective, methods, and reference materials. Project titles should be written in a formal thesis style, relevant to content, and able to sufficiently express the theme of the work. Fancy expressions should be avoided. If necessary, the judges may revise the titles.
    3. After completing the registration information, please go to the system to print out the "ETHICS STATEMENT" affidavit form, and all participating members, instructors, co-consultants, etc. must personally sign on the form, and then provide the signatured document (accepts PDF file only) to the system to complete the registration process.


  • Finals
    Documents that need to upload to the Macronix Science Awards’ website for Finals by August 21, 2024.
    1. Please send 14 unstapled copies of the final research result reports either in English or Chinese (maximum 30 pages of A4 papers with double - sided prints; extra pages may be attached as an appendix section) to the organizer as well as upload it to the Macronix Science Awards website (accepts PDF file only). The date on the postal chop will be taken as application date.
    2. The final research result report needs to contain research topic, motivation, objective, research process, conclusion, applications, and reference. Project names should be written in a formal thesis style, relevant to the content, and able to sufficiently express the theme of the work. Fancy expressions should be avoided. If necessary, the judges may revise the titles.
    3. PPT presentations are limited to 30 slides, and the file size should not exceed 5MB.

Selection Procedure
  • Preliminaries
    All submitted works will be reviewed by judge panel mainly on creativity to select the finalists.
  • Finals
    1. The finalists will make a 15-minute presentation of their final results and a 15-minute oral Q&A. The ranking will be determined by the judges on a consensual basis.
    2. Research work created from the project must be presented to the judges at the final judging meeting. If participants are unable to bring the research work to the final session, they must keep all necessary records of their research projects as the judges may conduct an evaluation at their labs.

Rewards
  • Certificate of participation
    Participating students who submit their research project creativity description report on time will be issued a certificate.

  • Preliminaries
    There will be no more than 20 finalists and 80 Honorable Mention projects chosen.
    1. Research subsidy for finalist: Finalists and their advisors can each apply for a maximum NT$20,000 in research subsidy.
    2. Honorable Mention: Students who have outstanding projects along with their advisors can each receive a prize of NT$5,000 as well as   a certificate.
    3. Best Science Education Promoter: The participating instructor who devotes to promoting science education in 23rd Macronix Science Awards will be elected as the best promoter and be awarded with a certificate at the Award Ceremony.

    * Finalists research subsidies: The research subsidies for the finalists are meant to facilitate further research work on their project ideas as indicated in their research project creativity description report, so that their final reports may have more complete and advanced result.

  • Finals
The Macronix Award:
The winner team will receive a trophy, certificates, along with the scholarship of NT$480,000.
The Gold Award:
The winner team will receive a trophy, certificates, along with the scholarship of NT$400,000.
The Silver Award:
The winner team will receive a trophy, certificates, along with thescholarship of NT$200,000.
The Distinguished Award:
The winner will receive a trophy, certificates, along with thescholarship of NT$100,000.
Best School Award:
The three schools that accumulate the highest scores in the contest will receive prizes corresponding to the scores (12 points for the Macronix Award, 8 points for the Gold Award, 6 points for the Silver Award, 4 points for the Distinguished Award and 2 points for Honorable Mention projects. For every point there will be a cash prize of NT$1,000).
Principal Award:
The principals of the top-three schools will receive a trophy.
Advisor Contribution Award:

Advisors who have a total amount of 24 points will be awarded a cash prize of NT$30,000 and a certificate. After cashing in on the points, the remaining points can be accumulated for future contests.

The organizer may choose not to declare a winner for The Macronix Award. The Macronix Award is given to a project that surpasses the The Gold Award significantly.
Recommendation Letter: Students who are selected for the Finals and awarded will be issued a Recommendation Letter from the Macronix science committee assisting in entrance into an undergraduate program.
The competition scholarship will be notified by the Foundation to the team leader’s school after the award ceremony. The school should provide the receipt to the Foundation to allocate the relevant funds.
The advisor of the awarded team will receive a certificate and trophy.
Participants who enters into the final round but fail to receive an award will be ranked as outstanding projects entitled to an award of NT$5,000 each along with a certificate. Their advisor will also receive a certificate.


Reminder:
 1. Those whose projects have been awarded with the top three prizes at other national or international science competitions cannot re-submit the same works for application.
 2. Research related to participating in the Science Awards Competition should comply with the Ministry of Education’s “Principles for Handling Academic Ethics Cases in Colleges and above” and conduct research in accordance with the research standards. If there is any violation, the qualifications to participate and awarded prizes will be canceled based on the seriousness of the case, and the prizes received will be recovered. If living organism is involved in the experiment, all scientific students must be conducted to treat the living organism with ethics. Any hazardous substance is prohibited from contest must protect the health and safety of the public and environment.
 3. The principle of anonymity requires that all of the written materials (including the presentations files for the finals), photos, graphic files, and audio-visual clips submitted by the contestants shall not show their school’s logo or mention the names of their school and advisors.
 4. The research idea must come from theteam members. If Generative AI software such as ChatGPT is used as a research aid, it must be clearly indicated in the description of the research method or research tool. Those who do not attend Finals forfeit their rights for receiving awards.
 5. The intellectual property rights of the projects belong to the participants, but Macronix has preferential treatment for negotiating rights.
 6. Both research project creativity description report and the final result report will not be returned.
 7. The Foundation has the right to publish the applicant research works on the Macronix Science Awards website, or to produce in relevant publications.
