Qualifications
|
- Contestants must be full-time students of a university or college in Taiwan (including graduate schools). There are no separate sections for undergraduate and graduate students, and they can form mixed teams (teachers and students in in-service training programs are not eligible).
- Each team shall comprise one to four members, and each person may register in two teams.
- Team advisors must be university or college teachers, and an advisor can coach more than one team.
- To encourage undergraduate students to participate in the contests, a "Young Star Award" has been established for the Application Category competition. This award is applicable to teams whose members are all undergraduate students.

Contest Categories
|
- Design Category – No specific theme. Entries are divided into Communication-RF/Mix-mode, Communication-Baseband, Embedded Sys. Processor (SOC), Mixed Signal, Testing, Multimedia, Memory and Sensor Integration according to their characteristics.
- Application Category – Presentable finished works made using existing ICs or ICs developed by the contestants. Entries are divided into Green, Medical, Automotive, Multimedia, Robotics, Digital Home, System Control and IoT according to their characteristics.

Contest Schedule
|
- Stage I: Online Registration
- Registration period: November 1, 2013 to December 26, 2013; all registrations shall be completed online.
- Details:
- Please visit the Golden Silicon Awards website and fill out the registration form. Required information includes: participated category, theme, name of team, name of the entry in Chinese and English, advisor, name of the team members (captain and members), name of the school and department in English and Chinese (please provide the official names as the school's official website), and contact information (address, telephone, mobile phone, and contact person).
- Please visit the Golden Silicon Awards website to download and fill out the "Contestants' Student ID Submission Form" and the "Entry Summary," and attach relevant documents. Please scan the relevant documents into digital files and upload them to the registration website to complete the registration process.
- Each team can update its registration information using its entry number and password before the registration closes on December 26, 2013. During the period between the registration deadline and the work plan submission deadline of April 7, 2014, each team may change its team information one time (relevant data such as the name of the team, the name of the entry in English and Chinese, team members, etc.). Please email the updated information or attachments to the organizer, with the email bearing the title "A14-XXX Entry Information Changes." The above mentioned information may not be changed after the work plan submission deadline.
- Stage II: Work Plan Submission
- Submission period: March 25, 2014 to April 7, 2014.
- Details:
- The work plan: The work plan shall be presented using A4 paper with the text typed in font size 12pt, single-spaced, within a 30-page limit (excluding the cover, references, and attachments), and saved in the PDF (Adobe Reader 7.0) format. Please see the "Notices of Work Plan Submission" on the Golden Silicon Awards website for instructions on the contents and cover of the plan. Please specify the entry number, name of the team, name of the entry, and the names of the team captain and team members.
- Attachments: There is no limit for the number of pages. They may be in the form of texts, graphics, videos or audio clips that may serve the purpose of presenting and explaining the work plan. (The recommended format is PowerPoint, JPG, TIF, BMP or video clips that can be played by Windows Media Player or Power DVD).
- How to submit: Contestants can login to the website using the account and password before April 7, 2014 to upload or modify the work plan or the attachments (the size of each file is limited to 5MB, and a maximum of three files can be uploaded) excluding the introduction to the work or videos of the working process.
- Each team in the Application Category must provide three copies in optical disc formats of its work plan, attachments, and videos of work introduction or working process (no print version is required). The discs must be sent by registered mail to: The Golden Silicon Awards Team, Macronix Education Foundation, at 8-3F, No. 208, Section 2, Xinyi Road, Taipei City (the postmark shall serve as the deadline reference).Teams in the Design Category can choose whether to provide videos of work introduction.
- Stage III: Preliminaries
- Date: The list of Honorable Mentions and the finalists for the Design and Application Categories will be announced on May 23, 2014.
- Details:
- The preliminaries will not require the presence of the contestants, and the judges will evaluate by the work plans.
- The judges will decide the Honorable Mentions in the preliminaries, and the results will be announced on the websites of the Macronix Education Foundation and the Golden Silicon Awards. The finalists will be notified via email. The list includes eight Honorable Mention teams each from the Design and Application Categories and 10 finalist teams each from the Design and Application Categories.
- The organizer will mail certificates of competition at the end of the contest to all of the teams that have completed the work plan submission.
- Stage IV: Finals
- Date: June 8, 2014.
- Details:
- The contestants of Design Category shall comprise a presentation and oral defense. Each team will have a total of 30 minutes: 20 minutes for the presentation and 10 minutes for the oral defense. The contestants of Application Category shall comprise a presentation, demonstration of the work, and oral defense. The Application Category contestants must bring their works and demonstrate before the judges. Each team will have a total of 40 minutes: 20 minutes for the presentation, 10 minutes for the demonstration, and 10 minutes for the oral defense. The teams must use the Office PowerPoint to make the presentation files and save the files in the 97-2003 versions.
- The final results will be sealed at the end of the finals. The First Place as well as the First, Second and Third Runner-ups will announce at the awards ceremony to be held later. The Honorable Mentions will be notified via email and phone before the awards ceremony. The awards ceremony is tentatively scheduled for mid July 2014, and the venue of the ceremony has yet to be announced.
- Travel subsidies: The organizer will partially subsidize the finalists' travel expenses according to the travel distances.
- Before the finals take place, the finalists must upload the receipts of scholarships through the "contestant login." On the day of the finals, they must bring along a copy of the student IDs they have registered when entering the contest, as well as documents for scholarship applications.

Evaluation
|
- Preliminaries:
Experts from the industry, government and academic sectors (excluding those who serve as team advisors) will be invited to serve as the judges of the preliminaries and the online evaluation. The judges will be assigned according to their expertise to conduct online evaluation of the contestants' works. The judges in the preliminaries will decide eight Honorable Mention teams and 10 finalist teams each for the Design and Application Categories.
- Finals:
Experts from the industry, government, and academic sectors (excluding those who serve as contestants' advisors) will be invited to serve as judges. The final results will be sealed at the end of the finals, and eight winners each from the Design and Applications Categories will be announced at the awards ceremony.
- Evaluation criteria:
- Design Category: 35 points for innovation, 25 points for content and quality, 25 points for degree of difficulty, and 15 points for the presentation.
- Application Category: 30 points for innovation, 20 points for completeness and operability, 20 points for practicability, 20 points for degree of difficulty, and 10 points for the presentation.

Eligibility and restrictions
|
- All of the contestants must be students of a college or university in Taiwan during the registration period for this year's contest. Teachers and students in in-service training programs are not eligible. (The schedule of the contest will be announced on the organizer's official website.)
- The principle of anonymity requires that all of the written materials (including the presentation files for the finals), photos, graphic files, and audio-visual clips submitted by the contestants shall not bear their school's logo or mention the names of their school, department, and advisors. The reference materials coming with the work plan shall not mention the advisors' names or publications. Please also avoid using the publications or unpublished theses of the advisors or other students from the contestants' department. Those who violate this rule will have their points deducted. In cases of serious violations, the judges can disqualify the contestants.
- All participating students and advisors hereby agree to authorize the team captain to assist in the registration process for the Golden Silicon Awards and provide the organizer and co-organizers with their entries and personal information for the purposes of evaluation, event arrangement, and communication.
- The work plan can be a thesis, research report, or a class assignment report. However, works that have already won top-three prizes at other national contests before the end of the registration period for this year's contest are not eligible.
- Should any team be found to have committed plagiarism or to be ineligible, the organizer shall disqualify it at any time. If the violator has already won an award in this competition, the violator shall return the prize and trophy/medal.
- All patents shall be owned by the contestants, and the organizers have the priority to negotiate for a deal with the contestants concerning the patents.
- The finalists and their resumes will be stored in Macronix' talent database, giving them priority of hiring when there are openings in the future.

Each team shall receive NT$10,000 and each team member shall receive a medal
Best Advisor Award:
Each advisor shall receive NT$100,000 and a trophy
Advisor Award:
Each advisor shall receive NT$50,000 reward and a medal

Each team shall receive NT$400,000 and each team member shall receive a trophy
First Runner-up:

‧A maximum of five teams will be selected for the First Place as well as the First, Second and Third Runner-ups among the finalists, basing on the judges' opinions and the works' quality. The number of the winning teams may vary, if necessary.
‧The Best Advisor Awards shall be given to advisors of the First Place as well as the First, Second Runner-ups and the Young Star Award winning teams. The Advisor Awards shall be given to advisors of the Third Runner-ups winning teams. Any team that has more than one advisor shall still receive same amount of the award money.
‧The Best Originality shall be given to the team which decided by final judges in consensus, and only one team each from the Design and Application Categories shall be selected.
‧To encourage undergraduate students to participate, teams formed by all undergraduate students may compete for the Young Star Award of the Application Category.
‧For award money in the amount of NT$20,000 or higher, 10% shall be deducted by the National Taxation Bureau for income tax.
